Honey berry ‘Altaj’ is a hardy fruiting shrub from the honeysuckle family, grown for its exceptionally early harvest and remarkable tolerance to cold climates. As a cultivated form of Lonicera caerulea, also known as honeyberry or haskap, it produces nutritious berries long before most other soft fruits begin to ripen.

This variety forms elongated blue berries with a pleasant sweet-tart flavour often compared to a combination of blueberry and bilberry. Harvest typically begins very early in the season, often from May into early June depending on local climate conditions.

‘Altaj’ grows as an upright, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a compact and naturally rounded habit. Once established, it usually reaches between 1.5 and 2 metres in height and width, making it suitable for fruit gardens, mixed borders, or edible hedging.

For best results, plant in full sun or light shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Honeyberries are among the most cold-tolerant fruit plants available and perform reliably even in regions with severe winters.

This variety is not self-fertile and benefits from planting alongside another honeyberry cultivar flowering at the same time to ensure reliable pollination and fruit production.
