The most important gardening jobs before winter arrives
October is one of the busiest and most rewarding months in a Hungarian garden. Summer is behind us, the days are getting shorter, and the first cold nights remind us that winter is approaching. But the gardening season is certainly not over!
In Hungary, October is especially important because the soil is often still warm enough for roots to develop, even though the air is becoming cooler. It is the perfect month to plant spring-flowering bulbs, prepare vegetable beds, look after roses and perennials, and protect tender plants before the first frost.
Here are the 12 most important gardening jobs for October, particularly for gardens in western and central Hungary.
1. Plant your spring-flowering bulbs
October is prime planting time for tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, muscari and alliums. Plant them in well-drained soil, generally at a depth of two to three times the bulb's height. For a natural appearance, plant in generous groups rather than individual rows.
My tip: Plant early, middle and late-flowering varieties together for colour from February until May.
2. Plant garlic and winter onions
October is an excellent month to plant autumn garlic in Hungary. Garlic benefits from winter chilling and establishes roots before spring. Plant individual cloves approximately 5–7 cm deep, spaced 10–15 cm apart.
Autumn onion sets can also be planted now for an earlier harvest next year.
3. Prepare your vegetable beds for winter
Remove finished summer crops, weeds and diseased plant material. Spread a layer of mature compost over the beds and protect bare soil with leaves, straw or another organic mulch.
Avoid digging heavy, wet soil. Earthworms and microorganisms will gradually incorporate organic matter over winter.
4. Harvest the last summer vegetables
Collect remaining tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, pumpkins and courgettes before frost damages them. Green mature tomatoes can ripen indoors, while peppers can be frozen, dried or preserved.
Pumpkins intended for storage should be harvested with part of their stalk attached and kept in a cool, dry, frost-free location.
5. Plant fruit trees, shrubs and berry bushes
Once deciduous plants become dormant, autumn is an excellent time to plant apple, pear, plum and cherry trees, along with currants, gooseberries and raspberries.
Container-grown plants can often be planted earlier, while bare-root plants should wait until leaf fall. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the roots without covering the trunk.
6. Prepare your roses for winter
Remove diseased fallen leaves and stop applying nitrogen-rich fertilisers. Avoid heavy pruning in October because new growth may be damaged by frost.
You can shorten very long stems slightly if strong winds are a problem. Leave major pruning until late winter or early spring.
7. Tidy perennials, but don't cut everything back
Remove diseased foliage and collapsing stems, but leave healthy seed heads of echinacea, rudbeckia and ornamental grasses where possible.
These provide food and shelter for wildlife and give the winter garden structure. Hardy, established perennials can also be divided while the soil remains workable.
8. Protect frost-sensitive plants
In Hungary, the first autumn frosts may arrive during October, especially in rural gardens and low-lying areas.
Move pelargoniums, citrus trees, tender fuchsias and other frost-sensitive container plants into suitable shelter. Have horticultural fleece ready for unexpected cold nights. Dahlias should be lifted after frost blackens their foliage, before the ground freezes.
9. Give your lawn its final autumn attention
Continue mowing while the grass grows, but avoid cutting it too short. Remove thick layers of fallen leaves that block sunlight.
October can still be suitable for lawn repairs and overseeding during mild weather. Use a potassium-containing autumn lawn fertiliser only if your lawn needs it.
10. Sow vegetables for autumn and early spring
Early October may still allow sowing of winter spinach, corn salad (mâche) and certain hardy Asian greens.
Germination slows as temperatures fall, so later sowings benefit from a cold frame or fleece. Broad beans and peas are generally safer as spring crops in colder Hungarian locations.
11. Collect leaves and make compost
Autumn leaves are a valuable resource, not simply garden waste. Collect leaves from paths and lawns, shred them if possible, and add them to compost or make leaf mould.
Leave some leaves beneath shrubs and in quiet garden corners to provide winter shelter for insects and other wildlife.
12. Prepare irrigation and garden equipment for winter
Drain hoses, empty watering equipment and protect exposed outdoor taps before freezing temperatures arrive.
Clean gardening tools, sharpen secateurs, store unused pots and check that greenhouse doors and cold frames close properly.

A special note about gardening in Hungary
Hungary's autumn weather can be unpredictable. A beautiful sunny afternoon with temperatures around 20°C can be followed by a surprisingly cold night.
In western Hungary, around Győr, October is usually a good month for bulb planting and soil preparation. However, gardens in low-lying rural areas may experience frost earlier than gardens within towns.
My most important advice: Don't rush to make the entire garden perfectly tidy. Leave healthy stems, some fallen leaves and natural hiding places for beneficial insects. A garden that looks a little untidy in winter is often a healthier garden in spring.
